9 George Street (Robert Roulain House) (f/k/a 5 George Street)Entry/Object ID
GEORGE.009.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1816; Victorian alterations ca. 1870. This lot was bequeathed by Daniel Legare, out of his property at 79 Anson Street, to his daughter Ann. It eventually was acquired by the brickmason Robert Roulain, who built the present dwelling by 1816 (previously numbered 5 George Street). Roulain conveyed the house in 1834 to the Reverend Daniel Cobia, the young minister of the new St. Peter's Episcopal Church on Logan Street. Cobia died tragically only 2 years later and the house was conveyed to Maj. William Laval, then the state treasurer for the eastern half of South Carolina. Laval lived around the corner on Anson Street and sold the building in the 1860s to the O'Neill family. They probably made the Italianate alterations to the house, such as the pressed metal window lintels and single light window sashes. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
