Constructed ca. 1838 by William H. Gilliland, a dry goods merchant. A tall brick residence typical of the 1830s and 1840s, yet strongly individualistic in character, being raided considerably over a high basement floor that is itself above ground level. The house's destruction was the result of careless treatment by its later owner, the College of Charleston, according to the narrative history on file.
