Name/Title

28 George Street

Entry/Object ID

GEORGE.028.1

Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1838 by William H. Gilliland, a dry goods merchant. A tall brick residence typical of the 1830s and 1840s, yet strongly individualistic in character, being raided considerably over a high basement floor that is itself above ground level. The house's destruction was the result of careless treatment by its later owner, the College of Charleston, according to the narrative history on file. File contains narrative history (unattributed, undated but after 1980?); newspaper articles (DYKYC). No photos on file. Image in this record is from document in the Property File.
