32 George Street (Robinson-Frenau House)Entry/Object ID
GEORGE.032.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1796. Although built by Elizabeth Robinson, this three-story wood single house was occupied from its completion until 1813 by Peter Freneau, an editor of the City Gazette and secretary of state for South Carolina. Freneau's more famous brother was Philip Freneau, an anti-Federalist editor. The house retains an early 20th-century shingle sheathing that obscures its origins, but it also retains an early scored masonry ground story. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
