GEORGE.058.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1802; restored 1971. Bernard Elliott, a wealthy planter whose family laid out Elliottborough in the northwest corner of the city after his death, built this house shortly after the end of the 18th century. The structure stands on a high masonry foundation, and the timber-framed walls were built with a double wall of studs to provide structural stability as well as the customary depth of a masonry building. Altered in the Victorian manner in 1870, the house contains woodwork from the Walker house at 26 George Street that was installed in the early 20th century. The house became apartments in 1952 before being acquired by the College of Charleston in 1971 and restored. The building retains its 18th century double-house shape with its hipped roof, now covered by a standing seam tin roof, hipped gables and chimneys. The building has housed the John Rivers Communication Museum since ca. 1988. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
