Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1855. William Harral acquired this lot from the glebe and built a simple but finely crafted side-hall-plan house by 1855. Retaining most of its original fabric, the house features a pedimented Greek Revival-style entry with matching lintels above the first floor windows. A roof with a front-facing gable and tripartite window surmounts the dwelling, while a 2-story piazza with square masonry columns on the first level supports the lighter Tuscan colonnade of the second tier. Transomed French doors on this elevation provide easy access to the side piazza. The glebe apparently retained the lots at 14 and 16 Glebe Street. These 2½ story brick single houses have finely detailed entablatures and gables, and Venetian style windows, features not usually found in Charleston architecture after 1830. Both dwellings retain original Tuscan-columned piazzas with simple Greek Revival door screens. File contains narrative history from the book Gems in a Crown by Harry Lightsey.
