Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1817-22. In 1971 the College of Charleston acquired this house from the descendants of a free person of color who had owned the property since buying it at auction in 1844. Apparently the dwelling was built on a lot sold as a result of a suit by Bishop Robert Smith's heirs in 1817. James C. Martindale, a planter, probably constructed the house within a few years after purchasing the lot at auction. The house went through various owners until being purchased by Joseph Johnson. Beginning as a small 2½ story weatherboarded house, the structure retains a 2-story rear addition with a flat roof, but another side addition was removed in the 20th century. File contains narrative history from the book Gems in a Crown by Harry Lightsey; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; graduate student report (Lauren Cannady, 2009) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation..
