GREEN.006.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1817; rehabilitated 1970s. Although owned at the time of the Civil War by Samuel S. Mills, this 2-story stucco single house with a full-tiered Tuscan piazza has been moved twice by the College of Charleston to make way for construction of the small library and college mall. The Wagener House is named for a teacher of French and German who apparently lived on the site in the late-1800s. Three College of Charleston alumnae in 1971 stood in front of the building to stop an approaching bulldozer from destroying it. This event led to the College's creation of a preservation committee.
File contains narrative history from the book Gems in a Crown by Harry Lightsey; newspaper articles; "The Wagener House Incident" (Stockton, CofC Magazine, 2015); undergraduate student research report on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation (Nicole Louise Frank, 2015).Collection
