Name/Title
10 Green Street (Gov. William Aiken House)Entry/Object ID
GREEN.010.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1841. This two-story house with raised parapet was built by William Aiken as one of a pair of identical rental houses circa 1841. The twin house at 8 Green Street was demolished in 1971-1972 to make way for the Robert Scott Small Library. The surviving house was built with the same solid construction methods and the extraordinary details as those seen in Aiken's rental properties at Wragg Mall. Original Greek Revival woodwork as well as evidence of graining has survived. The two-story piazza has French doors on the elevations similar to the houses at Wragg Mall. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
