Scope and Content

Built on property acquired in the 1790s by noted Charleston cabinetmaker William Axson Jr., the property was devised to his son, Samuel Edward Axson, a carpenter, along with a sum of money "sufficient to build a house thereon 35 feet by 18." Noted by the late architectural historian Albert Simons for its meticulous craftsmanship and its representation of the "continuity of pre-Revolutionary skill," this 2½ story Charleston single house with a slightly asymmetrical plan retains its original beaded weatherboarding. A double-axial-plan garden designed in the 1940s by Loutrel Briggs survives despite a subdivision of the parcel to the south. File contains narrative histories; newspaper articles (including 1939 DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; title research notes; set of HABS drawing (reduced size); copy of photo of the house (see Note); unattributed and undated drawing of street elevation and Greenhill Street Land Plat; copy of 1997 plat. No photos on file. Image in this record is from document in the Property File.
