Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1838; restored 1980s. Although the main house was built as the prototype for seven others after the fire of 1838, the English-bond brick kitchen was a survivor from the late-18th or early-19th century. The property was described in an advertisement in 1863 as having 6 finished rooms, a stable for 3 horses, and a carriage house for 2 vehicles. The main house stands apart from its later neighbors because of its simpler late-Federal (rather than Greek Revival) detailing. Its main entry door studded with sidelights featuring cast-lead ornaments of dogwood blossoms and wheat sprays hints at an interior that boasts some of the rare surviving stenciled ceiling decoration in the city. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains FOHG house history (1993); narrative history (undated, unattributed, but possibly from Vernacular Architecture Forum) and measured floor plan.
