Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1843; rehabilitated mid-1980s. John McNellage acquired a vacant lot at this address from Robert Wilson at the beginning of 1843. Wilson and his family owned numerous city properties, particularly in Ansonborough. The three-story dwelling stands on a high brick foundations with two bays on each floor and a surmounting brick parapet, ornamented by cast-iron anthemion grills. On the south facade the parapet steps down toward the south and a double-tiered piazza shades this elevation. The late-Italianate style arched door hood dates from a postbellum renovation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; wallpaper (historic?) sample; copy of ARP photograph; copy of photos of north, west, and east elevations, rear dependency and wall, detail of rear of 1st floor piazza (poor quality, undated, unattributed). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
