The first set in the folder is from the U.S. Geographical Survey Photographic Library. There are 34 photographs from Charleston County depicting the damage and devastation done to the town and surrounding areas. There are 95 photographs and 1 map. They appear as a collection in the "First-Hand Observations of the Charleston Earthquake of August 31, 1886 and Other Earthquake Materials - South Carolina Geological Survey Bulletin 41," compiled and edited by Kenneth E. Peters and Robert B. Herrmann. The bulletin includes collections of reports, correspondence, photographs and other data written or assembled by several investigators. The map is an "1886 South Carolina Earthquake Isoseismal Map."
