Scope and Content

Constructed 1841. Fletcher and Sessions, builders. A recorded specification and contract dated July 17, 1841, evinces that Eliza Jones, through her agent, S.S. Howell and the carpentry firm of Robert Fletcher and T.V. Sessions, contracted for work associated with a 3-story brick house on high basement with attached "back room or tea room," and pantry on this site. The document specifies that the piazza should be "10 feet wide as shown on the plan with fluted columns turned fancy balusters 3 inches in thickness with neat cornices." By tradition, Jones passed the house to her daughter, who married into the Sidney S. Howell family; it remained in the Howells' possession for a century. The large side yard of the property once had a Victorian style parterre. File contains FOHG house histories (undated,1999, 2004); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; copy of the "Specifications Between Fletcher and Sessions and Eliza Jones"' copy of ARP photograph; Rosen and Associates inspection report (2004); documents presumably filed in support of BAR application (photos, site plan, existing and proposed floor plans and elevations) no indication of approval status).
