42 Hasell Street (George Cannon House)Entry/Object ID
HASELL.042.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1845. Like its near neighbor at 38 Hasell Street and the Jones-Howell House across the street at 37 Hasell Street, this substantial dwelling follows the side-hall, double-parlor plan, but instead of a raised entrance, the front door is at street level. Although the stucco facade is largely original, the main door surround has been altered and the fluted Doric-columned piazzas encumbered by some enclosures. The interior stair rises to a second level that is probably the most elaborate in Ansonborough. Despite the severity of the exterior, Cannon's house has double drawing rooms with black marble mantels, Greek Revival style pilasters flanking windows and doors and extravagant plaster ceiling medallions and other decoration.
