Scope and Content

Constructed 1840-42; restored late 1960s. This 2-story, flat-roofed dwelling appears from the street to follow the same single house plan as its neighbors. Despite the regularity of its piazza screen entry, French doors from the porch lead into 3 different rooms. The stair hall is tucked into a rear projection. Although painted for most of the 20th century, the building is constructed of red Philadelphia pressed brick and its principal decoration can be found in its parapet with cast-iron grills and a surmounting dogtoothed cornice. Stocker built the house as an investment and it quickly passed through a succession of similar absentee owners, including the steamship magnate James Adger. The restoration of the building in the late 1960s by the Charleston police chief John Conroy was a high-water mark in the revitalization of Ansonborough. File contains FOHG house history (undated); newspaper article (DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; copy of ARP photograph.
