Scope and Content

Constructed 1842; renovated 1913. Edward Brickell White, architect. This Greek Revival church was originally built for a congregation of German immigrants who broke away from the more Americanized St. John's Lutheran Church when it dropped its monthly service in German. The building was originally of exposed brick and lacked the Tuscan-columned front portico. It had an interior with a centered pulpit and communion table below. When St. Matthew's completed its grand new edifice in 1872 on Marion Square, the building was first sold to Salem Baptist Church but was conveyed within a decade to another evangelical Lutheran congregation, St. Johannes. A number of improvements, including the installation of the art glass windows, were completed in 1913. File contains FOHG History (undated); house history from Landmarks in Use tour (3/7/1965); other narrative histories; building history from Architectural Guide to Charleston (by Simons & Thomas); newspaper articles (including DYKYC); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; various Church brochures; photocopy of 2 photos (one ARP).
