HASELL.050.1

Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1846. Although serving as the church rectory since 1920, this substantial stuccoed brick house was built in 1846 as a town residence for Joel Smith, an Abbeville district planter. The rectory's scale, like that of its neighbors to the west, exhibits a marked difference in size from the houses east of Anson Street. Its most unusual feature is its Italianate style window in the front gable. A Victorian entrance door with etched glass panels also ornaments the front facade. File contains FOHG History (undated); newspaper article (DYKYC); building history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; photocopy of ARP photo.
