HASELL.052.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1843; altered ca. 1886. A New England merchant and prominent member of the Charleston Unitarian Church built this house on a lot purchased in 1843 for about $1,500. By 1861 it was occupied by William H. Gilliland, a successful wholesale druggist-merchant on nearby Hayne Street. A significant feature of the house is the pressed sheet-metal ornament, probably added after the earthquake. Prior to the Ansonborough Rehabilitation Project of the 1960s, many neighboring houses had such added decoration.
File contains FOHG house history (1995); research by Louis Green (1968) related to the construction date; copy of ARP photograph.Collection
