HASELL.060.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1847. Perhaps one of Charleston's most eclectic antebellum houses, this dwelling was built by the merchant George Reynolds in 1847. It combines the Italianate-villa style, exemplified by twin Tuscan towers, and the Egyptian Revival, embodied in the detailing of the front square-columned portico. The house is the only one in Ansonborough set back from the street in this manner. Its flanking brick outbuildings provide a forecourt at the street line. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house history (undated);newspaper article (1931 DYKYC); very brief historical research notes; report entitled "Archaeological Monitoring and Documentation at 60 Hasell Street" by Carl Steen (Sept. 1992) photocopy of plat (1986); letter and memorandum (1995) authored by Jon Poston (HCF Director of Preservation) regarding attempt to re-zone the house; photocopy of ARP photo.Collection
