HASELL.064.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1843; rehabilitated 1982-83. A well-to-do building-supply merchant constructed this handsome Greek Revival style dwelling with a front double-tiered portico. The building has an unusual U-shaped plan with two large front rooms separated by a central hall and two smaller rooms at the rear. The interior is lavishly decorated with plaster friezes and extravagantly carved window and door frames in the Corinthian order. The double steps and wrought-iron rail add great distinction to the entry of the building. Held by a succession of noted Charleston families, the house passed to the Mazycks in 1852 and thence in 1853 to Mary Mazyck Gadsden, whose descendants held the property until 1937. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains scant historical research notes; newspaper articles (including 1971, 1972 DYKYC); photocopies of photos of exterior and interior (unattributed, undated); 1886 Earthquake damage assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage survey (PDF); correspondence and other documentation, including City Council proceedings from 1977, related to an application for rezoning (1982).Collection
