HASELL.066.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1839; rehabilitated 1984-85. Originally built as a lecture hall for the third Presbyterian Church, this building was sold in the 1870s to the Lazarus family. Formerly a tall single-story structure fronted with a fluted Doric-columned portico, it was converted, following substantial earthquake damage, by Florida Gadsden, who lived next door, as a residence for her daughter, Phoebe Gadsden Smythe. The Gadsdens added a 1-story columned piazza surmounted by a central pedimented portico. The latter feature was removed in the 1960s. Following a period of neglect, the house was restored as a law office in 1984. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)

Note
Notes: Per descendant, Bill Gadsden (wgadsden@aol.com, 973-805-2047): his family owned 64 and 66 Hasell Street in the second half of the 1800s and early 1900s. His great-grandparents, Christopher and Florida Gadsden, bought 66 Hasell for their two daughters, Florence "Flossie" and Phoebe. Buildings of Charleston spells his great-grandmother's name incorrectly. It is Florida, not Floride. Her maiden name was Florida Indiana Morrall.Created By
