16 Hayne Street (Young America Steam Fire Engine House)Entry/Object ID
HAYNE.016.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1847; rebuilt ca. 1872. Louis Barbot, architect. This fire engine house stands as one of the 2 survivors of the volunteer fire company buildings that dotted the peninsula before the organization of the Charleston Fire Department in 1882. These individual companies built small engine houses throughout the peninsula. Young America Company, founded in 1866, grew to 60 members. The current structure, a stuccoed brick 2-story building, has architectural details relating to the Greek Revival and Italianate styles, including pilasters surmounted by classical console brackets topped by a parapet with a modillioned cornice.
