JOHN.017.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1852-56. The wealthy builder William Henry Houston constructed five nearly identical 2½ story, frame Charleston single houses at 17-25 John Street. A resident at this time on nearby Charlotte Street, Houston rented the dwellings to a succession of clerks, clothiers, and craftsmen. Although all of the buildings retain two-story piazzas and closed gable ends with tripartite windows, each property reflects differing approaches to renovation. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
