Scope and Content

From 1900-1940, the Charleston Bagging Manufacturing Company occupied a large part of this block. After the plant closed, the Chicco Apartments occupied part of the bagging company and was occupied by The Hampton Inn at the end of the 20th century. 37 John Street, The Tower Depot, was built ca. 1849-50 as a passenger station of the South Carolina Railroad and subsequently became part of the Charleston Bagging Mfg. Company plant; it is attributed to architect Edward Brickell White. 39 John Street was built ca. 1880 and its redesign in 1943 is attributed to architect August E. Constantine. 37-39 John Street was later known as the Charleston Music Hall. File contains newspaper articles about Chicco Apartments, the proposed building of a musical theater, development of the Camden Tower sheds, and the SC Railroad complex, including mention of 39 John Street architecture; occupancy history from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; 1888 Sanborn Map showing Charleston Bagging Mfg. Co.; page from National Register of Historic Places Inventory Form describing Chicco Apartment Buildings and 39 John Street; article about and photo of Charleston Bagging Mfg. Co. from "Resources & Attractions of Charleston" (ca. 1898); City of Charleston "Request for Proposal, Camden Tower Sheds" (includes historical information) (1997); historical research report "The Charleston Bagging Manufacturing Company, 1878-1938" (Sarah Fick, 2014) (includes photographs and maps), Alternate address for Chicco Apartments: 345 Meeting Street.
