From 1900-1940, the Charleston Bagging Manufacturing Company occupied a large part of this block. After the plant closed, the Chicco Apartments occupied part of the bagging company and was occupied by The Hampton Inn at the end of the 20th century. 37 John Street, The Tower Depot, was built ca. 1849-50 as a passenger station of the South Carolina Railroad and subsequently became part of the Charleston Bagging Mfg. Company plant; it is attributed to architect Edward Brickell White. 39 John Street was built ca. 1880 and its redesign in 1943 is attributed to architect August E. Constantine. 37-39 John Street was later known as the Charleston Music Hall.
