3 Judith Street (Anna Tiedeman Tenement)Entry/Object ID
JUDITH.003.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1870-80. The widow of a German merchant, then residing at 9 Judith Street, built this small single house and the slightly larger versions at 5 Judith Street and 7 Judith Street in the late-19th century as rental properties. Mrs. Tiedeman and her husband filled in a creek bed to create these lots. The piazza at 3 Judith Street features an unusual arcade opening and recessed door screen. The real estate investor Morris Jervey built the small 2-story cottage with front piazzas at 1 Judith Street in the 1930s, utilizing similar vernacular detailing. Both houses reflect the changing economic character in the neighborhood.
File contains brief house history, presumably from SC Historical Society tour program; handwritten staff research "source notes" (very scant).Collection
