Scope and Content

Constructed 1817-20. John Robinson, the builder of the Aiken-Rhett House, erected the nearly identical weatherboarded Charleston single houses at 6 Judith Street and 8 Judith Street on raised brick basements in the second decade of the 19th century. Exemplifying the contemporary Neoclassical style, both houses retain their nine-over-nine windows, paired east chimneys, pilasters, and architraves on the piazza screens. Robinson constructed these houses with one-story piazzas, but a later owner constructed a second story piazza at 6 Judith Street some years later. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three folders containing documentation of covenant on the property; correspondence relating to the covenant, including right-of-first refusal; documentation of the sale of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alterations (including drawings); paint sample (unidentified); correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property; documentation of HCF's purchase and rehabilitation of the property; newspaper article about 6 and 8 Judith (DYKYC); house history of 6 and 8 Judith from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston; deed/title research; photocopies of photos (unattributed, undated); copy of HCF covenant information card. See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
