Scope and Content

Constructed 1923; rehabilitated mid-1970s; G. Lloyd Preacher, architect. Completed in 1923 as the city's first modern hotel, the Fort Sumter Hotel's Spanish Revival design alarmed the city's fledgling preservation community. Rising 6 stories above a ground lobby floor, the hotel represented burgeoning winter tourism in the city and was viewed as representative of "progressive modern architecture" that could threaten the character of Charleston's streetscapes. The Fort Sumter Hotel closed in 1974, a few years before the tourist boat docks were removed from this section of the Battery. Known today as the Fort Sumter House, the building now contains condominiums. File contains newspaper articles; photocopy of photo from SCHS collection (ca. 1920s?); BAR application and attachments (2004) (re: partial restoration of piazza, windows, doors) including photocopies of photographs and photocopy of architectural drawings; Rosen and Associates inspection report (1994, 2004); letter from Thomas Thornhilll to Mayor regarding HCF's position on plans to convert hotel into condominiums (9/18/1973).
