KING.024.1Scope and Content
The houses at 16-24 King Street were constructed in the nineteenth century; variously altered twentieth century, and is an interesting collection of single houses that reflect a typical 19th century Charleston streetscape. While some of the structures date from the early-19th century, the John Laurens North House at 24 King Street predates the 1820s. Some late-19th century alterations, such as the mansard roof on 22 King Street, reflect changes over time. Even the wrought-iron balconies that adorn the facade of 24 King provide insight to the evolutionary changes of a streetscape. Although their craftsmanship might date them to the construction of the house, this balcony and its likeness across the street at 23 King Street were removed from the facade of 56-58 Broad Street.
