Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1746; partially restored with an addition, 1930s; restored 1995-97. This stuccoed, brick dwelling is constructed on the northern portion of 3 lots acquired by Miles Brewton I in 1732. This portion of the property was inherited by the elder Brewton's daughter, Rebecca Roché, who in turn sold it to John Prue, a successful Charleston house carpenter. Prue probably built the present house with his own workmen in 1746. In his will, probated in 1773, Prue referred to himself as a "Cabinet Maker" and directed his executors to "sell and dispose of the Wooden and Brick Work of all that my Working Shop constructed and built in the yard of my massuage where I now live in Charles Town aforesaid as also all my Carpenters Joiners and Working Tools." Prue's holdings were apparently fairly extensive as his will mentions other real estate in Charleston and a plantation on Charleston Neck. Upon the death of Prue's widow without surviving issue, the property was devised to the College of Charleston and sold for the benefit of the college. In the early-19th century the southern portion of Prue's property was subdivided. The front room on the first floor contains an important carved mantel and overmantel dating from construction. The rear dependency, built as the kitchen and laundry, has most of its original asymmetrical fenestration. The dependency was joined to the main house with a hyphen addition in the 1930s. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; research on fireplace; house history from Vernacular Architecture of Charleston & the Lowcountry; newspaper article; historical/deed research information. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
