55 King Street (Grimke-Fraser Tenements)Entry/Object ID
KING.055.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1762. Originally built as a double tenement by the jeweler Frederick Grimké, this property was inherited in the late-18th century by his grandson, Charles Fraser. Fraser, Charleston's most noted early miniaturist, painted likenesses of more than 500 of Charleston's elite during his long career. The 2½-story Flemish bonded brick dwelling was converted to a single family residence in the mid-20th century, but a fire wall is still visible through the slate hipped roof. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains FOHG house histories (1974, 1995); other narrative histories; newspaper articles (including undated DYKYC); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston.Collection
