KING.075.1Scope and Content
Constructed before 1739; restored and renovated early 1950s, mid-1980s. William Elliott, whose distinguished family began here as a "brotherhood of builders," appears to have had this 3½ story house constructed sometime before 1740. The less regular design and floor plan of the structure are common attributes of earlier 18th century construction. One of the oldest surviving Charleston single houses, the building retains much of its interior woodwork. A shop door in the center of the front elevation was converted to a window more than a century ago. Mentioned in Elliott's 1765 will, the house was then used as Mary Stokes's boarding school. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains house history (Watts, 2017); historical/deed research (Samuel G. Stoney, undated); FOHG house histories of main house (undated, 1994, 2009) and dependency at 75½ King Street (1994); newspaper articles; architectural drawing and documents "Kitchen House Roof Additions and Hyphen Fenestration Alterations (Richard Marks Restorations (2003) that include photocopies of photos, site plan, as-built and proposed elevations, proposed floor plans, as-built and proposed roof plan, proposed roof framing plan, as-built and proposed hyphen-wall section, proposed roof framing section detail.
