KING.079.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1747-49; altered 1875; restored 1935, late 1980s. The merchant Francis Baker built this small, 2½-story stuccoed brick single house after purchasing the lot from vintner Elias Hancock and before his death in 1749. His will specified that his lot on King Street "built upon." The house was converted to a dry goods store in the 19th century and restored in 1935. The brick, gable-end structure next door at 77 King Street may have served Baker as a shop, and the rear stucco dwelling may have been a kitchen and slave quarter. Both of these buildings have had extensive alterations in the 20th century. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Subordination of Mortgage; easement appraisal report (1987); Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations (including for addition of a pool), and correspondence related to the management of the property, including violations; narrative history (undated, unattributed); Preservation Progress "Plaques Awarded" (1970).
