Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1782; variously restored and renovated 20th century. The grandson of the French Huguenot immigrant who established Middleburg Plantation on the Cooper River completed this diminutive 2½ story Charleston single house just after the American Revolution. Though it retains its original weatherboarding, nine-over-nine windows, and even some of its shutters, the house has gone through numerous renovations. Simons lost much of his property in the Revolution. Shortly after building this house, he was killed in a duel. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence, Confirmation of Understanding, and market value appraisal (1983); Part I certification (National Register); annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; FOHG house histories (undated and 1991); newspaper article (DYKYC); photocopies of photos; Rosen and Associates inspection report (1996). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
