84 King Street (George Ross House)Entry/Object ID
KING.084.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1785; renovated 1908. Strikingly different from the smaller 18th century structures that line this section of King Street, the dwelling of tinsmith George Ross at 84 King represents the large-scale construction in Charleston of the post-Revolutionary economic boom. Stylistically this building results from the interest in both the Georgian and Federal periods in the late-18th century. The earthquake of 1886 destroyed all of the existing dependencies on the site and damaged the exterior masonry walls of the main house. In 1989 Hurricane Hugo damaged the roof as well as the stucco work.
