125 King Street (Peter Guillemine Building a/k/a Tellis Pharmacy)Entry/Object ID
KING.125.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1885; rehabilitated 1983-84. This building survives as one of the few remaining Queen Anne style wooden commercial structures in Charleston. After it was built, the property became the shop for Guillemine and Riley, a firm dealing in tinware and stoves. The Guillemine family lived upstairs and enjoyed the projecting front bay with its paired windows overlooking King Street. Adapted as a pharmacy by the early-20th century, this site, purchased by the Tellis family in the 1940s, may be the oldest continuous location for a drugstore in the city. In its recent rehabilitation preservationists and the Board of Architectural Review supported the reinstallation of the pharmacy's old neon sign because of its historic importance to early 20th century King Street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains copy of advertisement for Guillemine & Riley from ca. 1889 business directory (illustrated); newspaper article about pending renovation; occupancy history from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book.Collection
