KING.147-149.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1878-80; renovated with additions 1890. The 3-story brick double building at 147-149 King Street was constructed between 1878 and 1880 as the grocery of Ernst J. Hesse, a prosperous merchant of German descent who lived in Harleston Village. By 1890 the property was divided and featured 2 storefronts of equal proportion. Occupants include a series of grocers, furniture and tinware merchants, booksellers, antiquarians, and florists. The Preservation Society of Charleston purchased 147 King Street in 1978 as its headquarters. The design of this structure is typical of late-19th century commercial buildings on King Street. Distinguishing features of the storefronts include oversized glazed windows, paneled bulkhead, cornice molding, and central entries with double doors and transoms. Rear piazzas with an entry to the upper stories of 147 King Street mark the west side of the building.
