KING.150-154.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1868. Patrick Kugen, who later served as treasurer of the city, constructed this triple storefronted building in 1868 on a lot burned over in the fire of 1861. The architectural details of cornice and window lentils survive on the southernmost building at 150 King Street. At Kugen's death his son inherited the southernmost building while his daughter inherited the double structure at 152-154 King Street. When a later coat of stucco fell, original scored stucco was revealed, still visible on the facade. The cornice was removed from 152-154 King Street and the storefronts altered, excepting the pilasters, in the mid-20th century. These storefronts have since been restored. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
