KING.159.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1865-66. A Gothic style crenellated parapet caps an otherwise unremarkable two-bay, Greek Revival brick structure at the corner of Clifford's Alley and King Street. The builder, George W. Flach, a German immigrant, dealt in watches and silver on this site occupied in the 18th century by the Charleston silversmith Thomas You. Several years after Flach's death the property was sold to Patrick Conroy, operator of a furniture shop, and was utilized for several different commercial purposes. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
File contains newspaper article (1975? DYKYC); Preservation Progress "Headquarters History" (with photo) (May 1975); graduate student report (Kelly Ciociola, 2008) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation (wills, deeds, plats, etc.).
