KING.169.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1870. Elizabeth Ballard, a widow, inherited a lot bequeathed to her by her husband on a site which contained a building before the fire of 1861. Mrs. Emma McKenzie bought the property in 1866 and completed construction on this 3-story brick store and residence. Mrs. McKenzie's building appears deliberately simple in detailing and lacks a cornice on its large exposed parapet. Whether a cornice existed and was removed is a matter of some debate. Beneath the parapet three recesses hold iron grills depicting eagles. Mrs. McKenzie's property was rented for a number of years to the Rugeheimer family, drapers and tailors from Germany. Several modern condominiums have been constructed at the rear of the property adjacent to the 3-story kitchen building. This construction interrupted a walk which formerly led to the Unitarian churchyard.
