Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1853; altered ca. 1870; rehabilitated 1983. Francis D. Lee, architect. This range was actually designed as two double buildings, but in a manner to appear as a single facade. Lee utilized the Greek Revival style for the upper stories with their six-over-six windows with brownstone lintels and sills and an overhanging dentiled entablature. Sometime after the Civil War, Italianate detailing and cast-iron columns with Egyptian Revival style capitals replaced simpler brick columns and the lower facade designed by Lee. This ground story served many uses in the 19th century, from a confectioner's, a dressmaker's, and a furniture dealer's to Singer Manufacturing Company and a fraternal hall; the upper floors were utilized as an inn. Heavily deteriorated by the 1950s, the range was thoroughly rehabilitated by 1984 and again used as shops and an inn. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; narrative histories; deed research; King's Courtyard In brochure; newspaper articles (including DYKYC); photocopy of 1968 plat. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
