Constructed ca. 1800-06; renovations 1870-1900. George Flagg, a prominent paint dealer and craftsman who in his younger years achieved notoriety as one of the pre-Revolutionary Sons of Liberty, may have built this 3-story brick structure in the early years of the 19th century. Flagg had already leased the property for 4 years when he purchased it from Lawrence Benson. Selling it in 1810 to Dr. Michael Fronty, a French surgeon and doctor formerly engaged at the University of Mountpellier in France. Fronty practiced medicine and lived in the building, providing care for the poor as well as paying patients. Although the structure retains its basic upper floor fenestration, Italianate style pedimented window heads were added to the second story. A heavy cast entablature and parapet were added during the ownership of the Blum and Ficken families, who owned most of the property in this block in the late-19th century.
