KING.202.1Scope and Content
Constructed ca. 1912; rehabilitated 1980, 1992. Walker and Burden, architects. John Rugheimer, a German immigrant, settled in antebellum Charleston and, after a stint as a blockade runner, opened a tailor shop later at 169-171 King Street. After his death, his sons purchased this site in 1911, demolishing a 19th century structure except for the north common wall and building the 3-story brick edifice. The arched ground story with banded pilasters and bracketed granite capitals supports a yellow brick upper facade divided by brick pilasters topped by a granite entablature and a parapet with a panel designating the family name. The simpler south wall of red Philadelphia pressed brick has typical arched window openings of the early-20th century commercial type. When it was rehabilitated as an inn in 1992, the developers purchased the site next door, where a 2-story double building with a pressed-tin facade lost its entire facade to Hurricane Hugo. It was replaced with a 3-story masonry structure with reminiscent stucco detailing.
