Scope and Content

Constructed 1995-96. Samuel S. Logan III, LS3P Architects. A newly constructed commercial and office building named by its owners, descendants of Albert Sottile, for the grandest of his King Street theaters (now demolished), Majestic Square stands 4 stories above the street on the site of the Victoria Hotel (217 King Street), demolished in 1970 for a bank, now removed. The corner entry is reminiscent of earlier King Street buildings, while the cast stone detailing, albeit contemporary, relates the structure to the Riviera theater across the street. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) File contains newspaper articles (one about the design of Saks and one about the demolition of Victoria Hotel, with photograph); occupancy histories of 211-217 King Street from Old Codgers' Charleston Address Book; copy of photo of Victoria Hotel from This is Charleston; copy of a ca. 1909 postcard of the Ladies' Exchange lunch room (215 King Street); correspondence between HCF and the Beach Company (developer) about the design, naming, and other matters (1994); Beach Company sales brochure. Majestic Square is also known as 153 Market Street. Images #2, 6, 7 from 1967 King Street Photographic Survey.
