KING.216.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1839-40; renovated and rehabilitated 1980s. Patrick McBride, a merchant and auctioneer who immigrated to Charleston from Ireland, constructed this 3-story masonry building after the fire of 1838. Sold in 1846 with a "three story brick dwelling house thereon and outbuildings," the property passed briefly through the hands of a dry goods merchant and became the property of Patrick Coogan for the rest of the century. Vincent Chicco, a colorful figure in early 20th century Charleston acquired the property in 1906. Known as the "king of the blind tigers," he was famous for his opposition to Prohibition laws. Chicco apparently added the pressed-metal decoration to the building, including the semicircular window hoods and bracketed entablature and arched parapet. After this work was complete, the building was occupied by the Academy Inn. In more recent years it was renovated and the facade was entirely removed and rebuilt, although the decorative elements were retained and replaced. The adjacent properties to the south, including the red pressed brick structure at 214 King Street and the site of 212 King Street, were owned by Henry Brown, a men's clothier, from 1888 until after the turn of the 20th century. In 1909 the Hampton Lee family, owners of Southern Furniture Company, constructed the 3-story gray brick building at 212 King Street, with its large windows and cast metal entablature over its first floor storefront.
