Scope and Content

Built between 1896 and 1898 by Prince G. Anderson. Recently underwent a costly renovation designed to preserve and show off its original wooden walls, ceilings and floors. No narrative history on file. Needs further research. File contains newspaper article about the renovation that uncovered the house as a Freedman's cottage. Photographs and descriptions in this record are from the Post & Courier Photo Gallery: #2: Not only were the wall and ceiling boards salvaged from earlier buildings, but the uneven windows also might have been installed on an earlier building. Both show how 266 Ashley Ave. was built on a shoestring budget. #3: One of the many mysteries about 266 Ashley Ave. was how this mantle was installed in the front room - a room that never had a fireplace. Builder George Holt just decided to leave it there. #4: The renovation included closed-cell insulation in the walls, which helps lessen the noise from the nearby Crosstown Expressway (in the distance). #5 This small stair likely is either original or was added shortly after it was first built around 1898. #6: The new kitchen at 266 Ashley Ave. is sleek and modern except for the pantry doors, which were built from boards recycled from other parts in the house. #7: A later addition behind these French doors at 266 Ashley Ave. was torn down - the only change to the house's floor plan. While the boards on the walls look cobbled together, they're original. #8: Can't afford baseboards? Then you can always paint the lower wallboard to resemble a baseboard, which is what was done at 266 Ashley Ave. No photos on file. Image in this record is from website.
