SMITH.061-63.1Scope and Content
Built ca. 1823-24 by Simon Magwood for his eldest son and his wife Rebecca O'Hara. Simon Magwood also built a house for himself at the corner of Smith and Bull Streets (67 Smith Street), and by 1825, the two families were living side-by-side in their very similar 3-story dwellings. Charles Magwood occupied the house until his death in 1859, and three of his unmarried children retained ownership for decades. In 1905, the house was sold to Mrs. Charles Gibson, who carried out some modernizations and improvements to the house. By ca. 1931, the Gibsons moved out and the property was owned by Read Phosphate Company, at which time Mrs. Alice Youngblood converted the dwelling into a boarding house and kept roomers there until 1935. Josiah Smith then bought the dwelling and subdivided the main house and outbuilding as apartments. These rentals carried the property for years. Dorothy and William Watson bought the property in 1961, having lived in one of the apartments since 1944. In 2008 Mrs. Watson's estate conveyed the house and its large undivided lot to HCF (purchased through HCF's Revolving Fund).
