MEETING.172.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1908; rehabilitated 1974. John D. Newcomer, architect. The C.D. Franke Company, carriage makers and formerly suppliers of gun carriages, bought this block extending to Church Street in 1905. Then controlled by Emil Jahnz, the company built its large factory at 171 Church Street and this three story, pressed brick building as its showroom and office by 1908. The window surrounds, flat on the second story and segmentally arched on the third, harmonize with the pressed-metal pedimented entablature giving the Franke name and dates. The entablature and parapet were heavily damaged in Hurricane Hugo in 1989 but fully restored afterward. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.)
Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; newspaper articles (including partial DYKYC, date not indicated); photocopies of photographs (unattributed); letters (1938, 1950) on company letterhead with illustration of building; photocopy of plat (1978).
See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography.
