ASHLEY.192.1Scope and Content
Constructed 1859-61; rehabilitated 1980s. A family of prosperous grocers built this elaborate stuccoed brick dwelling with a mix of Greek Revival and Italianate details on the eve of the Civil War. The elaborate terra-cotta door and window surrounds incorporating anthemion motifs accent a side-hall-plan dwelling with a closed front gable and double-tiered piazzas. Tradition holds that General Pierre G.T. Beauregard used this house as his headquarters during the Siege of Charleston. The original builders held onto the house for 8 generations, although as the neighborhood developed surrounding garden and orchard lots were subdivided to create new building opportunities.
File contains brief house history from a ca. 1930 St. Philip's Tour program (from scrapbook 2008.005.13); house history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual (2011).Collection
