Scope and Content

Constructed ca. 1789. The sister-in-law of the wealthy rice planter Thomas Heyward completed this simple Neoclassical villa within a few years after the Revolution. The curvilinear bay on the south facade boasts a Venetian (Palladian) window lighting a large upstairs drawing room. Rented by Mrs. Heyward's daughter to Julia Datty, the dwelling served as a girls' school run by this native of French Santo Domingo. The Augustine T. Smythe family acquired the house in 1868, and their descendants have resided here ever since. An extensive line of kitchens and stables survive along the south side of the dwelling. Smythe relations also owned the two houses to the north. The noted antebellum writer Louisa McCord bought the single house at 35 Legare Street in 1859. She was probably responsible for the Victorian alterations, including the mansard roof and the bay windows, added to the Federal-period dwelling. In the early-20th century Augustine T. Smythe bought the circa 1818 Glen House at 37 Legare Street for his daughter Susan, wife of the noted writer, John Bennett. File contains FOHG house histories (ca. 1948, 1995); architectural description from Architectural Guide to Charleston; story about the house from Post-Courier booklet "60 Famous Houses" (ca. 1968); photo of 1937 survey; email to Kitty Robinson (3/3/2006) from homeowner seeking HCF's approval to modify the front steps (outcome not indicated); garden description from The Secret Gardens of Charleston by Louisa Pringle Cameron; photocopy of article "Historic Schools of Legare Street" by Sarah Fick (Preservation Progress, v. 54, n. 1).
