[side 1]
Dearest Etta, Your last letter
to Helen reached us yesterday. It
was dated only Friday, & directed
to Columbia, & we cannot tell
what its date is, or make out
the post mark. So we fear they
have missed some of my late
letters telling of my return home
& of Helen's great improvement.
We left Columbia on the 15
Jan [prob]). The has been getting
well & strong ever since & [illegible]
flesh(?) & color every day. I can-
not be sufficiently grateful for
this happy condition of things
& for my relief from the killing(?)
[illegible] & apprehension that
had [illegible] of me for three
months. Now we fell as if he
can really & safely think of prep-
arations for the coming weeks.
[side 2]
Helen's sewing machine works
beautifully & with very little
fatigue. So I hope the talk
of preparations will not be
very arduous. I am hoping
my grandchild will be a girl
for in that case I get to
choose the name. I have not
decided whether it shall be
Mary Ion or Mary [illegible].
Which do you think? I cannot
tell you with what delight I
look forward to this baby!
Your letter gave us many
items of interesting news, as your
letters always do. I feel very
sorrowful sometimes at know-
ing so little of what goes on
in my old home. What is
Hamilton's re--f--ti---. [Illegible]
said the young couple left
[illegible] for N.Y. I hope Henry
Seabrook has been slandered &
[side 3]
that he is not really unsteady.
Is Emmie staying with you &
what are the accounts of Caro-
line's health. Are there any
prospects of grandchildren in the
family. Aunt Heart wrote
that you were expecting a
visit from Elise Rhett. I
am sure you will enjoy [illegible]
her with you. She is such a
charming companion. Helen
had lately such a sweet
letter from her by hand(?). In
exchange Sheis(?), Elan(?), me
& the few of Helen's friends who
write to her - "Out of sight, out
of mind." I wish I did not
remember so well & feel so
keenly "affection's altered
eye." There are some people
whom every body seems to re-
member both by letter & visit.
My sister W. Singleton is
one. When she comes to Columbia
it is almost a struggle who
[side ]
shall have her as a guest. She
receives as many visits, & as
much attention as a bride
& her correspondence is wonder-
ful & people write to her
twice or thrice for her once.
And when her daughter mar-
ries, her presents(?) can hardly be
counted - many of them from
people who did not know Led-
die(?), but were "old friends of
Mamma." Is not this delight-
ful & to be envied!
I hope Aunt Heart got
my last letter & its enclosure
for Mr. Ths.(?) Robinson.
& let me know. Tell me all
the plans [illegible] you go to Jehos-
sie & when [illegible] this confine-
ment he [illegible]. I have a
white girl this time - a friend for
Helen's daughter. I am
much please dearest at your
writing to Richard's fiancée, &
he is so(?) much [illegible] to write(?)
to me(?). My love to Burnet.
Kiss the Aiken boys for me. Helen sends love
& asks if you received her letter & the
clock works(?).
Your most affect,
M. R. SingletonCollection
